Surgery Services

From April 2012, the majority of surgery, including all inpatient vascular surgery, colorectal surgery and upper gastro-intestinal surgery will be carried out at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH).

Following lengthy talks with our surgeons and clinical staff, it has been agreed that inpatient urology surgery will also take place at RSH.

The main reason for concentrating surgery at RSH is to ensure that we continue to provide safe and secure health services and keep surgery in our county.

Inpatient head and neck surgery, including Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) and children's surgery will be carried out at PRH. We expect this change to start to take place from summer 2014.

The reason for this change is that the majority of ENT procedures we carry out are on children (over 800 a year). It is therefore vital that these take place at PRH where children's inpatient services and children's doctors (paediatricians) will be based.

Inpatient breast surgery will continue to be carried out at PRH as now.

Most day case surgeries (which account for 8 out of 10 surgical procedures) will continue to take place at both hospital sites as now, as will hip or knee replacement or fracture repairs.

Most surgery for life-threatening trauma will continue to be carried out at RSH as now.

We need your help

We are inviting people to take part in focus groups to discuss the future of surgery in more detail and to share your concerns and ideas for the future.

The next Surgery Focus Group meeting will be on 1 March 2012 at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. If you would like to take part in a focus group please email the project team via future@sath.nhs.uk

Alternatively, come along to our next Patient and Public Briefing where you can find out the latest information about the changes and put your questions to our Chief Executive Adam Cairns. You can find the dates for our next briefings here.
