A Shropshire fundraiser has handed over a cheque for £555 to say thank you to staff at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital’s Neonatal Ward. Chris White, a firefighter from Shrewsbury, raised the money by completing the 26-mile London Marathon in April. He chose to raise money for the Neonatal Ward at RSH as to say thank you for the incredible care and support that the staff gave to his family when his daughter, Chloe, was born prematurely at 28 weeks.

A 10-year-old Shropshire boy has returned to the Neonatal Unit which was home for the first 22 days of his life – and presented a cheque for £350 which he raised from a sponsored bike ride. Luke Tuckley-Skelton, from Telford, handed over the money along with his mother Julie in a visit to the unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital this week. He raised it through sponsorship for an eight-mile trip along the Silkin Way, which he did with family and friends the day after his 10th birthday last July.

A 61-year-old man has praised staff at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust for their “wonderful” care after he was treated for mouth cancer. Charlie Baxter, from Oakengates, was diagnosed with mouth cancer last June and was treated by the Head and Neck team at the Trust. He and his wife Jane were so delighted with the care that he received while with the Trust that they have raised £130 through a raffle held on 14 February and tombola on 5 April at their local community centre.

Midwives will soon be able to use new laptops to improve the way they take notes thanks to a generous donation of almost £19,000, which will help efforts to move to paperless patient records. It has now been more than 300 days since the last MRSA bacteraemia case was recorded in our hospitals. This achievement is thanks to the efforts of staff in every part of the Trust. The organisation has a ticking clock on the front page of the staff intranet so that everyone working on a computer can see how long it has been since the last MRSA bacteraemia, and this has now passed 300 days. In fact, there have only been two cases recorded in the last 27 months.

BCG is one of the drugs available that can be instilled directly into the bladder. If you could see flu germs, you would see how quickly they spread. Cold and flu germs can live on some surfaces for hours. To protect yourselves and others this winter, always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze.
