Quality, Services and Beds
In the most recent Annual Health Check, the independent Care Quality Commission rated us as EXCELLENT for our Quality of Services (ratings for 2008/09 published in October 2009).
Total inpatient overnight beds in the Trust: 873 (as at 31 May 2011).
Note: the total inpatient overnight bed figure above excludes assessment trolleys, day case beds, renal and chemotherapy stations, labour beds and community midwifery beds.
Princess Royal Hospital:
- 328 acute adult inpatient beds
- 24 acute paediatric inpatient beds
- 24 surgical day case beds
- 5 station chemotherapy day centre
- 20 station renal dialysis unit
- 12 bed midwife-led maternity unit
- 8 ITU/HDU beds
The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) provides inpatient, outpatient and day case facilities.
Services include general and acute medicine, cardiology, general surgery, urology, critical care, trauma & orthopaedic services, paediatric services, emergency treatment and renal dialysis.
PRH also provides day case treatment for ENT, oral surgery, ophthalmology and haematology.
PRH also has a 10-bed private patient unit (the Apley Unit) and a private outpatient facility (the Apley Clinic).
Royal Shrewsbury Hospital:
- 393 acute adult inpatient beds
- 23 acute paediatric beds
- 30 surgical day case beds
- 16 bed chemotherapy day centre
- 24 station renal dialysis unit
- 54 bed maternity unit (41 beds in the consultant unit, 13 beds in the midwife-led unit)
- 6-bed neonatal intensive therapy unit and 16-bed special care baby unit
- 9 ITU/HDU beds
This Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) provides inpatient, outpatient and day case services.
Services include general and acute medicine, cardiology, general surgery, urology, gynaecology, critical care, trauma & orthopaedic services, paediatric services, emergency treatment, oncology and ENT (ear, nose and throat).
RSH also provides inpatient and day case treatment for ENT, oral surgery, oncology, haematology, ophthalmology. It is also the location of the consultant-led maternity unit for the area (with a co-located midwife-led maternity unit) as well as theShropshire and Mid Wales Fertility Centre.
Ludlow Hospital:
Alongside local community services run by Shropshire County Primary Care Trust, we provide a 7 bed midwife-led maternity unit.
Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital:
Alongside specialist orthopaedic services provided by the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital NHS Trust, we provide a 6 bed midwife-led maternity unit.
Bridgnorth Hospital:
Alongside local community services run by Shropshire County Primary Care Trust, we provide a 4 bed midwife-led maternity unit.
Other Services
The Trust also provides consultant-led outreach clinics and other services at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital NHS Trust and Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Whitchurch, Newtown and Welshpool community hospitals. As part of an exemplar obstetric model of care, we also provide community midwifery services.
Finances
The Trust's total turnover in 2009/10 was £263m
We made a financial surplus of £0.7m and have repaid the final instalment of our working capital loan.
From our total budget:
- 68% is spent on the staff who provide your care or provide essential support services (e.g. portering, catering, cleaning, technical and scientific staff, HR, payroll)
- 16% is spent on drugs, dressings and other costs directly related to providing your care
- 10% is spent on essential supplies (e.g. uniforms, linen, food and transport), accommodation (e.g. electricity, gas, water, rates, furniture) and administrative & support services (e.g. postage, telephones, training)
- The remainder (6%) covers other essential costs such as our contribution to the national Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts

The majority of our income comes from our three main "commissioners" who purchase services from us on behalf of patients and communities. These are:
Activity
During 2009/10 we saw:
- 57,144 elective/planned and day case hospital spells
- 39,800 non-elective/unplanned hospital spells
- 301,767 outpatient appointments
- 103,098 accident and emergency attendances
- 6,738 maternity episodes (single or multiple deliveries)
Our Staff
At the end of 2009/10, the number of people on our payroll was 5053 people. Many of our staff do not work full time, so our "whole time equivalent" workforce was 4201.50. This included:
- 464.94 doctors and dentists
- 1258.58 nurses & midwives
- 543.40 scientific, technical and therapies staff
- 1058.49 other clinical support staff (e.g. health care assistants)
- 876.09 non-clinical staff (e.g. estates, facilities, catering, administrative, managerial)
In addition to people who work for us, there are many other people who may work within our hospitals (e.g. staff in training, staff contracted from other organisations, hosted and visiting staff, volunteers).
