Why become a member?

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is the main provider of NHS hospital services for over half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.  Our services include the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury.  We also provide midwifery and community services from other locations across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid Wales.

We plan to become an NHS Foundation Trust by 2013.  This is a new type of NHS organisation, but it remains firmly part of the NHS.

You can become a member of the NHS Foundation Trust.  This will give you more say in how our services are run.

As a member you can choose to have as much or as little involvement as you wish.  This could include:

  • Simply becoming a member to show your support for local hospital services
  • Receiving regular newsletters about the hospitals and other services we run
  • Being consulted on the future development of our services
  • Having access to a Public Governor who represents your local area and brings views from your area to the Trust
  • Telling us about the needs and expectations of your local community
  • Voting in elections for Public Governors
  • Coming to the Annual General Meeting to hear about our successes and challenges
  • Getting involved in focus groups, workshops and special interest groups about the health issues that matter to you – tell us how you want to be involved

If you want to have a major role in the Trust you can even stand for election as a Public Governor.  This would involve attending meetings of the Council of Governors and talking to the communities that you represent so that you can bring their views to the Trust.

Members of Staff

Members of staff become Staff Members of the NHS Foundation Trust unless you tell us that you do not wish to be one.  Staff Membership forms part of induction for new staff.

Please talk to your line manager if you have questions about our plans to become an NHS Foundation Trust.

Become a Public Member of Other NHS Foundation Trusts

You can be a Public Member of more than one NHS Foundation Trust.  For example:

  • the main provider of mental health and learning disabilities services in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin is the South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.  You can find out more about the Trust and becoming a member from their website.
  • the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital NHS Trust is a provider of specialist orthopaedic services.  They are applying for NHS Foundation Trust status. You can find out more about the Trust and becoming a member from their website.
