Local NHS raises awareness of NHS Continuing Healthcare retrospective eligibility assessment deadlines

NHS Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire County Primary Care Trust (PCT) are encouraging anyone who thinks they may have been eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare to come forward.

NHS Continuing Healthcare is the package of support funded by the NHS, to help care for a patient’s physical or mental health needs that have arisen as a result of disability, accident or illness. Individuals assessed as having certain level of care needs may receive NHS Continuing Healthcare. It is not dependent on a particular disease, diagnosis or condition, nor on who provides the care or where that care is provided. If an individual’s overall care needs show that the primary need is a health need, the person should be eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare.

The Primary Care Trusts are currently reviewing applications for previously un-assessed periods of care, which require assessment for NHS Continuing Healthcare.

The PCTs are encouraging people who think they may have been eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare, between 1 April 2011 – 31 March 2012, to contact the appropriate team before the deadline of 31 March 2013.

Individuals should contact their local Primary Care Trust for further information on how to notify the PCT of a request for assessment of eligibility. This notification should be given within the deadlines above. It is important people come forward as soon as they can, as applications received after the deadlines may only be considered if there are exceptional circumstances for doing so.

Yvonne Chetwood, Interim Continuing Health Care Lead for Shropshire County Primary Care Trust, said: “We encourage anyone who thinks that they or their family or friends should have been assessed for NHS Continuing Healthcare support, perhaps following an accident, illness or disability to contact us for consideration for an assessment.

"Nationally all PCTs are encouraging people to come forward, to ensure that patients have the opportunity to receive the appropriate funding support from their local NHS.”

Susan Spence, Head of Commissioning, NHS Complex Care, NHS Telford and Wrekin, said: “Even if you are not sure whether you should have received NHS support for your care needs, contact our team and we will be happy to advise. NHS Continuing Healthcare helps patients each year, who require care packages to help them manage their condition. All PCTs across the country are encouraging patients to come forward, and ensure they do not miss out on the opportunity to be assessed for support.”
