What is Cancer?
The most common type of cancer is that which forms a lump or tumour in an organ within the body or the skin. The organs of the body are made up of cells. Cancer is a disease of these cells. The cells normally divide in an orderly manner. Sometimes cells divide out of control, developing into a lump or tumour. Before a tumour becomes cancerous it may have a phase of being 'pre-cancerous'. This means the cells are changing but have not yet become completely cancerous.
Not all lumps or tumours are cancer. A tumour can also be benign. A benign tumour is not cancerous. Cancer can also develop within the blood, such as leukaemia, or in the lymph nodes, such as lymphoma. Some types of cancer can form within bone or muscles.
