The Gastroenterology team also perform EUS and ERCP procedures. The Respiratory team carry out Bronchoscopy procedures at both Shrewsbury and Telford sites. In addition to this, Cystoscopy procedures are carried out by the Urology team in the Endoscopy unit at the Princess Royal Hospital.
Endoscopic Procedures
The most common endoscopic procedures include upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy, Bronchoscopy and Cystoscopy.
In an upper GI endoscopy, the doctor examines the oesophagus, the stomach, and about 3/4 of the duodenum (the first section of the small intestine).
In a flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, the doctor examines the inside of the rectum and the large intestine (the colon).
A bronchoscopy is an examination of the major air passages of your lungs.
A cystoscopy is an examination that examines the interior lining of the bladder and the urethra.
The endoscope itself is a thin, flexible tube with fibre optic light source and a tiny video camera on the tip. In addition to cameras, the endoscopes have at least one channel through which tiny tools can be passed. These tools can be used to biopsy an area (taking a pin size piece of tissue), control bleeding, remove polyps, stretch narrowed areas and many other therapies.
