ENT (Ear Nose and Throat)

The ENT and Head & Neck outpatients departments provide care for patients with a variety of problems including general ear, nose and throat diseases, neck lumps, cancers of the head and neck area, tear duct problems, facial skin lesions, balance and hearing disorders, snoring and sleep apnoea, ENT allergy problems, salivary gland diseases and voice disorders.

The Hearing Services Department and the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Department are also located within the outpatient area, working closely with the ENT and Head & Neck speciality to provide a comprehensive interlinking multidisciplinary service.

The Speech and Language Therapy Department (SLT) for adults is located next to ENT outpatients and provides specialist speech and language therapy for ENT and voice disorders.

Specialist ENT Services

The department offers comprehensive ENT services including;

  • Neck Lumps

  • Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

The ENT department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is one of the first centres in the UK to provide an endoscopic approach to sinus surgery. This type of surgery is more physiological and it avoids an external scar on the face.

  • Endoscopic DCR

The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is one of the main referral centres for this type of surgery.

  • Middle Ear surgery

This includes advanced middle ear surgery including stapedectomy and middle ear and mastoid reconstruction.

  • Voice Surgery

Our Specialist Consultant and Specialist Speech and Language Therapist conduct a joint voice clinic twice a month, to look at voice disorders.  If you have organic lesions in the vocal cord you would be treated with voice surgery techniques that include microlaryngoscopy laser treatment. Following surgery, voice rehabilitation is provided to you by the Speech and Language Therapist.

  • Facial Plastic Surgery for Facial Skin Lesions

The facial skin lesion clinic is a focus for patients with basal cell carcinomas or other skin lesions of the face that require surgical excision and local small flap reconstruction or skin grafting. Following referral by your GP, you would be seen in the clinic and booked to have the facial skin tumour removed on a designated local anaesthetic operating list.

  • Head and Neck Cancer Surgery

All patients with symptoms suspicious of head and neck cancer will be seen by our ENT consultants who specialise in the management of head and neck cancers.  The Head and Neck Clinic is now firmly established to manage all head and neck cancer and our dedicated head and neck oncologist can provide radiotherapy treatment. The remainder of the team comprises: Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Head and Neck Cancer Liaison Nurse, Pathologist and dedicated radiologists. The team is also supported by the Plastic Surgeons, Dietetics, Physiotherapy and Palliative care department on request. The department has produced a comprehensive protocol on the treatment of head and neck cancer to take into account the special needs of this geographical area and this document also includes instructions for referring under the 2-week rule. Each new patient is seen by the Head and Neck multidisciplinary team and treatment is carefully planned together with patients and relatives.
