The Spinal Team at Princess Royal Hospital consists of Mr Bruce Summers, Spinal Consultant Surgeon, and two specialist Physiotherapists, with support from a full imaging service and an interventional Consultant Radiologist who performs nerve root blocks under CT scan image guidance.
Mr Summers sees and investigates nearly 900 new patients with spinal pain and sciatica each year, and performs spinal decompression operations for acute sciatica and spinal stenosis of the lumbar spine.
Mr Summers works in close liaison with the Spinal Unit at Oswestry for patients requiring surgery for cervical disc lesions, malignancy, infection, trauma and deformity. Most of our patients are treated at Princess Royal Hospital, as only a small percentage of patients with these conditions require or are suitable for surgery. We manage 98% of our patients with mechanical back pain conservatively in a multidisciplinary approach. Mr Summers also advises and refers to pain clinics in the hospital and community for facet joint injections, epidurals and nerve root blocks.
