Care for local patients using endoscopy services at Shropshire’s two acute hospitals is being improved as clinicians are benefitting from high-quality teaching and training.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is an appointed Joint Advisory Group (JAG) training centre. Its annual report has shown that all seven key areas of quality have been met, and the Trust has demonstrated an appropriate governance structure to deliver high-quality training courses.
There are different types of endoscopy, which is a medical procedure that allows clinicians to look inside the body to diagnose conditions, take tissue samples and provide treatment. Thousands of procedures are carried out each year at SaTH, which runs the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.
JAG is the UK’s leading accreditation scheme for endoscopy services. It sets rigorous national standards across patient experience, clinical safety, training, and leadership.
As a JAG training centre, SaTH is a specialised, accredited facility that delivers high-quality endoscopy training for the gastrointestinal (GI) workforce.
Managed by the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG) under the Royal College of Physicians, these centres offer mandatory, standardised courses for endoscopists and nurses, ensuring safe, effective and quality-assured training to meet patient care needs.
The latest JAG Training Centre annual report highlights:
- Over 70% of attendees highlighting the course was above expectation
- The ambition to expand into different procedures and the strong multiprofessional approach from the faculty
- Active engagement with external faculty for courses
- Assistance of courses by local faculty regionally and nationally
- Admin available five days a week
Dr John Jones, Medical Director, said: “We carry out thousands of these appointments each year so investing in the training for staff to offer the best care possible is a priority.
“This endorsement of our endoscopic training programmes reflects the Trust’s ambition as a University Trust hospital. The report showcases excellent trainee feedback, a wide multidisciplinary faculty and an expanding portfolio of endoscopy‑related learning – reinforcing our reputation for high‑quality, clinically led education that directly enhances patient care.
“These achievements align strongly with our wider education ambitions as we move into our Group model with Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust in April, where both organisations bring complementary expertise and a shared commitment to creating a larger, more resilient and future‑focused training ecosystem.
“As we formalise our Group, we will be able to grow and diversify our training offer even further by broadening access, supporting career development across professions, and positioning Shropshire as a leading centre for health education and innovation.”
