A Shropshire hospital clinic room has been transformed following the addition of a nature-inspired mural, funded by the region’s primary cancer charity.
Lingen Davies Cancer Support commissioned local artist Charlotte Tisdale to design, and hand paint a piece of artwork for the ceiling in a clinic room at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Most of the treatments that take place in the room include the removal of skin cancer – a procedure that typically requires patients to look up to the ceiling, often lasting up to 45 minutes per session.
The cancer charity started the project following a request from Helen Childs, a nurse working in the unit. As the clinic room is used for patients of all ages, the charity-funded ceiling mural was designed to create a relaxing and engaging scene that would be suitable for both children and adults.
Emilie Kerr, Events and Marketing Coordinator at Lingen Davies, said: “After having the pleasure of designing an interactive mural for our Sunflower Appeal in the waiting area of the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, I was delighted when we were approached by Helen to do something similar in one of the clinic rooms.
“The sunflower design in the Centre waiting area was well-received by both patients and their families, with lots of great feedback, so we immediately knew just how beneficial this project would be for local people undergoing cancer treatment and other procedures in this room.

Helen Childs, Dermatology Nurse at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, said: “Having any sort of procedure under local anaesthetic when you are awake throughout, can be a daunting experience. For our patients requiring skin surgery we wanted them to be looked after in an environment that was calm and inviting. We see all ages in our procedure room so having a mural with lots to see and interact with was a priority.
“Charlotte has done a wonderful job. The ceiling tiles are bright and colourful – there are insects to find to distract our patients from their clinical procedure and the patients have fed back how it has helped make their surgical experience be a more positive one. Thank you Lingen Davies and the very talented Charlotte.”
Shrewsbury-based artist Charlotte said: “The brief was to paint something fun, colourful, and engaging that would help distract patients. I decided to go for a woodland inspired scene with creatures to be found and winding leaves that the eye can follow.
“It was really lovely to meet and work with Emilie and the team from Lingen Davies, and come up with something we thought could help the service users that visit this treatment room. I really hope it helps those who need it.”
Charlotte Tisdale from Shrewsbury is well-known locally for her murals around the town centre, in particular for the large feature piece covering the front of the former House of Fraser building on High Street. Her work can also be seen in the multi-faith room at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Lingen Davies Cancer Support is the primary cancer charity dedicated to making a positive difference for people living in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and Mid Wales. In June 2025 the charity launched the £5million Sunflower Appeal to grow cancer care across the region through the development of the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital by 2029.
