Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Charity is delighted to have received a £1,500 grant from the Welcome Break Charitable Fund, thanks to a nomination from a member of their staff, Sian Bowen.

This follows an earlier £1,000 grant secured through Sian’s support two years ago, bringing the total donated to £2,500.

Sian nominated the charity after her daughter, Emily, received care on the Children’s Ward at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

Recently, Sian visited the ward alongside Welcome Break Customer Services Manager Tracey Palfrey, meeting members of the team including Lisa Harris, the Play Specialist who supported Emily during her treatment, and Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation.Sian Bowen and Tracey Palfrey present the cheque to the Children's Ward and the Hospitals' Charity

Sian said: “I was overwhelmed by the support Emily and our family received back in October 2023. The play specialists were incredible and helped make being in hospital feel normal. I still remember the things the play specialist did that kept Emily distracted during things like blood tests and made a difficult experience that little bit easier.

The grant will help fund items for young patients including toys for the playrooms, Xbox controllers and other resources that provide comfort, distraction and enjoyment during a hospital stay.

Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Sian for nominating Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Charity and to Welcome Break for their continued support.

“These generous donations help us provide additional items and experiences that make a real difference to children and families during their time in hospital. The support of fundraisers and donors like Sian enables us to go above and beyond for our patients and staff.”
