A Shrewsbury club has donated £1,000 to benefit women receiving treatment for breast cancer in Shropshire.
The Inner Wheel Club of Shrewsbury made the donation to the Breast Service at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH).
Carole Copplestone, President of the Club, said: “I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer just over a year ago. I was very well cared for in hospital by Mr Tamoor Usman and his team and in clinic with Sue Lewis and now have a clear mammogram.
“Sue was invited to our Inner Wheel Dinner Meeting in September to give a talk and we made a small donation to the fund. From there I decided that the one big charity event our club does each year would be for the SaTH Breast Cancer Research Fund.”
The charity event proved a massive success. More than 60 people attended a Sunday curry lunch at the Trinity Centre in Meole, Shrewsbury, which featured delicious dishes, desserts and raffle prizes all provided by volunteer members of the club.
Carole added: “Through the generosity of members of Inner Wheel and Rotary plus other members of the public it was a huge success. A total of £961 was raised at the event and we added to it, so that we could present a cheque for £1,000.”
Carole together with other members of the Club, Mary Pascoe, Pat York and Julie Bayley presented the cheque to Sue and Mr Usman at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford recently.
Mr Tamoor Usman, Consultant Breast Surgeon, said the money would be used to benefit patients and it was likely it would pay for new equipment, although no final decision has been made.
He added: “I would like to thank the Shrewsbury Inner Wheel for this very generous donation.
“Such donations are immensely important to the Breast Service and enable us to provide the best possible care that we can to all our patients.”
