A hospital ward at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital was transformed into a wedding venue on December 1 after health issues prompted a couple to tie the knot.

David Donaldson proposed to his partner of 16 years, Lorraine Davis, on Tuesday 29 November and 48 hours later they were proclaimed husband and wife.

As soon as the news of the proposal broke, the team on Ward 26 Urology got the ball rolling before decorating the room and supplying food and drink for the celebrations.

“I have known Lorraine for more than 20 years and I have been with her for 16 years. She finally nailed me down!”

The Wellington couple were married by their local vicar and good friend, Margaret Smallman, who was assisted throughout by the Trust’s own Chaplin Petro Hryziuk.

Lorraine said: “Everyone has 161202-weddingcouple1-1024x682gone to so much effort, it is amazing. We are so grateful to everyone who helped make our day so special.”

Claire Harvey, of Ward 26, who played the role of key wedding organiser to ‘Make it Happen’, said: “We were first told of the plan at 4.30pm on Wednesday and 24-hours later we were ready to go. It has been a really exciting time, and wonderful for the patient and his family.

“The team has been fantastic and we were delighted to get a bouquet of flower donated to us by the League of Friends as I know this is the one thing Lorraine really wanted.”
