Architect impressions for a new cancer treatment centre at Princess Royal Hospital in Telford have been revealed, offering a glimpse of the important facility that will increase capacity for cancer treatment across Shropshire, Telford and mid Wales.

The images showcase the proposed Lingen Davies Cancer Centre, a purpose-built facility designed around the needs of patients, creating a calm, welcoming and therapeutic environment where people can receive treatment closer to home.

Delivered through a partnership between the region’s primary cancer charity Lingen Davies Cancer Support and The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), the centre forms part of the Hospitals Transformation Programme.

Funded through Lingen Davies’ £5 million Sunflower Appeal, the new centre will significantly expand local cancer services and is expected to open in 2029. The charity recently marked the anniversary of the Appeal launch by announcing £1.25 million has been raised to date.

The centre is being carefully designed within an existing hospital footprint to utilise as much space as possible and is expected to provide a range of spaces to support chemotherapy and other treatments, alongside facilities that could support consultations, more complex procedures and other aspects of care.

The design is also considering how spaces can provide greater privacy, comfort and choice for patients. These features will help create a modern, welcoming environment designed around the needs of patients and their families.

Angie Cooper, Matron for Oncology and Haematology at SaTH, said: “The concept of this new centre reflects how modern cancer care should be delivered. We’ve worked closely with the architects so that all spaces in the centre are not only clinically efficient but also improve the experience for patients during what can be an incredibly difficult time.

“Having increased chemotherapy capacity will allow us to care for more patients in an environment specifically designed for cancer services.

“Importantly, it means more people from Telford and the surrounding areas will be able to receive high-quality treatment closer to home, while strengthening cancer services across the whole county.”

It is expected that the new centre will improve the flow of patients, allowing consultations, diagnostics and treatment to take place in one place. The new centre will also enable more patients to receive chemotherapy and outpatient cancer treatment locally, while easing pressure on existing services at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Around 37 per cent of patients currently treated at the Lingen Davies Cancer Centre in Shrewsbury live in the Telford area. The new centre will enable a proportion of those patients to access treatment much closer to home, reducing travel times while creating additional capacity that benefits patients across the wider region.

The new centre will complement the existing Lingen Davies Cancer Centre at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, creating a network of modern cancer facilities across the region rather than replacing current services. Together, the two sites will provide  greater capacity, helping meet increasing demand for cancer care over the coming decades.

The release of the CGI impressions marks another major milestone for the Sunflower Appeal, Lingen Davies Cancer Support’s largest-ever fundraising campaign, which aims to raise £5 million towards the delivery of the facility.
