Pre Op Assessment PRH. Staff Nurses Dom Gemino and Dorne Bartlett

Staff at Shropshire’s acute hospitals got into the Christmas spirit by decking out wards and departments with colourful decorations.

Christmas trees and other decorations have helped to brighten up the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) and the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford for the festive period.

Many of the decorations were yesterday (Wednesday 21 December) judged as part of an annual Christmas competition run by The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), which runs RSH and PRH.

Almost 30 wards and departments across both hospitals entered the competition.

The competition was judged by Julia Clarke, Director of Corporate Governance; Helen Coleman, Lead Nurse for Workforce, Education and Quality; and Patient Experience and Involvement Panel (PEIP) members Eileen Anderson, Brian Bennett, John Eden and Linda Parker.

The winners were Pre-Op Assessment at PRH with the runners-up named as the Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) at RSH. Highly commended were the Children’s Ward and Renal Dialysis Unit at PRH and the Mail Room and Clinic 10 at RSH. But everyone was a winner, as all of the wards and departments which entered or were nominated received a box of chocolates.

Julia said: “Christmas is a difficult time to be in hospital as a patient and our staff go the extra mile to help make a stay in hospital as comfortable as possible.

“Their efforts to brighten up wards and departments with decorations were brilliant and really help to make a difference.

“The judging panel was really impressed with the standard of entries – which all adhered to infection prevention and control guidelines – and the innovative ways that staff weaved our Trust Values of Proud To Care, Make It Happen, We Value Respect and Together We Achieve into their designs.

“Thank you to everyone who took part. I’d like to thank our staff for their continued efforts, during a difficult period in the NHS – we really appreciate everything they do every single day for our patients.

“Finally, I’d like to wish all of our patients, staff, partner organisations and the rest of the communities we serve a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
