The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Charity has opened its festive grotto at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) to mark the start of a new campaign supporting children’s services.

At Christmas, The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) is always touched by the generosity of local businesses and communities who donate toys and gifts. This year, the hospital charity is appealing for support that will make a lasting difference for the children cared for across its services.

The new campaign will fund exciting developments, including a sensory room and a sky garden at RSH, designed to enhance the experience of young patients and their families.

The two new areas will be designed to improve the experience of young patients and their families.

A sensory room will provide a calming space for children who may feel anxious or distressed, while a sky garden outside the new children’s ward on the third floor will offer an interactive and soothing environment as part of the Hospitals Transformation Programme. Together, these spaces will bring comfort, stimulation and a welcome distraction during hospital stays.

While gifts and toys continue to be warmly welcomed, the charity is encouraging financial contributions this year as these will enable improvements that benefit children throughout the year and create a lasting legacy.

Rachel Bennett, Paediatric Matron, said: “The new sensory room and sky garden will have a meaningful impact on the wellbeing of our young patients. These spaces will provide comfort and tranquillity and create an environment where children can thrive and find joy, even in difficult times.”

Julia Clarke, Director of Publication Participation, added: “We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our community. The generosity we receive is heartwarming and truly makes a difference in the lives of the children we care for.”

Donors can visit the hospital to make their donation and take a photo in front of the festive grotto, a perfect backdrop to celebrate supporting children’s healthcare.
