More than 10,000 patients have now received their operations at the elective surgery hub at The Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), marking a major milestone in reducing waiting times for planned care.
The landmark patient was treated on Sunday 7 June, highlighting the continued impact of the £24 million investment in the dedicated facility. The hub is designed to provide protected planned care for both adults and children, helping to reduce waiting times and minimise disruption from emergency pressures.
The hub provides a wide range of procedures, including gynaecology, vascular, ophthalmology, orthopaedic, breast, upper gastrointestinal (GI), ear, nose and throat (ENT), maxillofacial and general surgery. It features a dedicated admissions area with individual patient pods, four modern operating theatres and recovery areas.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has also been recognised nationally, achieving accreditation as part of the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) elective surgical hub programme. This confirms that the hub meets strict clinical and operational standards to deliver safe, efficient and high-quality care.
Across England, 14 hubs were accredited in the latest cohort, bringing the total to 83 since March 2023.
For patients, this means shorter waits for common planned procedures, fewer last-minute cancellations, more same-day discharges and greater protection for planned surgery from emergency pressures.
Jo Williams, Group Chief Executive, said: “Reaching 10,000 operations at our elective surgery hub is a fantastic achievement and shows the real difference this investment is making for our patients.
“The hub is helping us reduce waiting times, improve patient experience and provide high-quality care in a dedicated setting. I’m incredibly proud of the teams who have made this possible through their hard work, skill and commitment.”
The milestone has been made possible by the dedication and teamwork of colleagues across clinical, operational and support services.
Madison Naylor, who became the 10,000th patient to undergo a procedure at the hub, shared her experience.
She said: “The staff were friendly and always made sure I was okay. I was quite nervous, but they were really reassuring and helped me feel at ease. Everything was very clean and having the privacy of a private room was great. I was relieved to finally have my operation, and everything was carried out quickly and smoothly.”
