A heart doctor will run Shrewsbury Half Marathon on Sunday in aid of a charity that helps purchase new equipment for Shropshire’s two acute hospitals.
Dr Jayesh Makan, a Consultant Cardiologist at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), hasn’t run the 13.1 mile distance in over 10 years but was inspired to do so following the re-launch of the SaTH Charity.
He said: “Charitable donations are an important funding stream to ensure we can purchase diagnostic and therapeutic equipment for our patients, allowing us to deliver high quality clinical care.”
The SaTH Charity is a registered charity that is making a real difference to our patients, affected friends and family, and members of staff in our hospitals. The charity pays for equipment, patient comforts, staff education and research, which go above and beyond the funded services provided by the NHS.
As well as wanting to raise funds for the SaTH Charity, Jayesh started running to improve his fitness and to help promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
He said: “I started running again to improve my cardiovascular fitness and was due to run the Shrewsbury 10K in March but unfortunately it was cancelled due to the ice and snow. The Shrewsbury Half Marathon seemed like the perfect step up. I have been told it is a beautiful course but most importantly it is my home town.
“With less than a week to go I feel as though training has gone well. I have braved ice, snow, rain and extreme heat and so far have come through unscathed. I’m looking forward to a good turnout at the race and will value support from friends, family, colleagues and patients.
“As a Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Director for Cardiology and Respiratory Medicine, I am proud to have the opportunity to raise money for the Cardiorespiratory Department and in addition promote a healthy lifestyle by participating in the race.”
