Junior surgeons across the UK are getting hands-on experience of how to deliver outstanding patient care, thanks to a new training programme developed by the Trust which runs Shropshire’s acute hospitals.
The West Midlands Surgical Skills Course, which takes place at the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford, teaches basic skills, such as wound management, plastering and the use of anaesthetics, through a series of practical workshops led by experienced Consultants at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH).
Mr Jae Rhee, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and course director, said: “By enhancing the skills of junior surgical trainees, as well as Specialist Nurse Practitioners who are interested in developing their basic surgical skills, we are able to ensure the people of this area continue to receive the high quality patient care they deserve.
“Instilling good surgical practice at an early stage of training is a pivotal component to providing high quality surgical and patient care.”
The first inaugural course, held in November, was a huge success, with people across the UK attending, and has now been extended to run over two days, two times a year.
Mr Rhee said: “We need to put SaTH on the map and attract junior surgeons, and that is exactly what this course is doing. Furthermore, when they are here, in our fantastic new Clinical Skills Lab at PRH, they will hopefully fall in love with the Trust and choose to stay with us, become part of our society and help make us bigger and better.”
The next West Midlands Surgical Skills Course will take place at PRH on 8 April. Spaces on the courses are limited so to apply please email Karen.bryan@sath.nhs.uk
