Staff at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), who have gone the extra mile in their care of their patients, are in the running for its Public Choice VIP Award 2017.

Three nominees – Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Stuart Hay and the Fracture Clinic Team, Senior Paediatric Audiologist Faye Perring and Gastro/IBD Specialist Nurse Sally Edwards – have all been nominated by their patients for the award.

The Trust introduced the Values in Practice (VIP) Awards to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of its staff to deliver high quality care to patients. There are ten categories that highlight the efforts of more than 5,000 staff and around 1,000 volunteers – including the Public Choice Award, which is the only award to be voted for by the public.

Members of the public can vote for their winner until 28 September 2017, by following the link:  https://awards.sath.nhs.uk/

The nominations for the Public Choice Award 2017 are:

Mr Stuart Hay and the Fracture Clinic Team

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Stuart Hay, Senior Staff Nurse Netty Lewis and Keiran Bentick, Registrar

Compassionate, dedicated and kind – Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Stuart Hay and the SaTH team in the Fracture Clinic have been recognised by a patient for always going the extra mile. Mr Hay and the team of nurses, physiotherapists and registrars, based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, have been nominated for their courtesy, patience and kindness by a patient they had treated for an open fracture to the lower leg.

It is an absolute honour to be nominated as it is an indicator of what patients think about the team,” said Mr Hay. “There are a number of people involved in our team and each one is an experienced and dedicated member of staff. As a team we have very good rapport, and we have a good working knowledge of the conditions that we treat. That ability of the team is reflected in patient confidence.

“Everyone in the team is reliable and does their job enthusiastically, and that creates a comfortable atmosphere for the patient.”

The nomination reads: “What an amazing team of people – everyone is dealt with courtesy, patience and kindness. The staff are good humoured and compassionate, answering all questions efficiently and politely. Their expertise and knowledge is unquestionable and their dedication skills and compassion deserve recognition.”

Faye Perring – SaTH Senior Paediatric Audiologist

                          Faye Perring

A kind and welcoming face at a time of uncertainty, SaTH Senior Paediatric Audiologist Faye Perring has been nominated for helping to turn a family’s ‘daunting’ experience into a positive one. When their newborn was born with a hearing impairment, the family said Faye was ‘amazing’, always keeping them informed and putting them at ease. “She has made what was an incredibly scary and uncertain time in to something that we can pull positives from,” they said in their nomination.

Mum-of-two Faye, who is based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, has worked in the NHS for 17 years. Faye, from Shrewsbury, said she was surprised and delighted by the nomination.

“I have children of my own so I understand how they must be feeling when they come into the clinic, and how important it is to put them at ease and explain what is happening,” said Faye. “It is a very rewarding job, no day is ever the same and it is great to be able to make a difference.”

The nomination reads: “Faye is a kind individual who looks after us all so well when we have appointments. Our son was born with a hearing impairment and from our very first meeting when he was two weeks old, she has been amazing. We are always kept informed of what is happening, what the tests are for and what the outcomes are. Our questions are always answered, without ever feeling like we are asking a silly question. We feel so at ease going to see Faye and she always makes us feel like we have known her for ages.”

Sally Edwards – SaTH Gastro/IBD Specialist Nurse

              Sally Edwards

‘Compassionate, empathetic and understanding’ is how one patient described Gastro/IBD Specialist Nurse Sally Edwards. The patient nominated Sally, who is based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH), for always being on hand to support her and her family through what had been a traumatising diagnosis, and taking the time to explain anything that they found difficult to understand.

Sally, who lives in Shrewsbury, has worked with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patients for the last five years; and she is determined to help make a difference to the lives of those who suffer from the debilitating disease. She runs a one hour daily advice line for IBD sufferers, who can also leave voice message 24 hours a day for her to respond to.

Sally said: “It’s a complete honour to be nominated for this award. We have so many compassionate staff in the Trust who aim to give the safest and kindest care, I feel very privileged. I couldn’t do my job without the help of everybody in the gastroenterology team. I absolutely love my job – it is something that I am passionate about. For those that suffer from IBD, I want to help make sure that it is a disease that does not rule their life – and help make a difference.”

The nomination read: “From day one on my IBD journey Sally has been by my side. Compassion, empathy and understanding of how traumatising what I had been through, shone through in Sally’s care. A truly fab asset to your team.”
