Patients, visitors and colleagues will now be able to use a new temporary takeaway food hub at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH).
The Apley Food Hub was set up to provide temporary catering facilities after the kitchen and Apley Restaurant was closed when Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was identified in Autumn 2023.
It has now moved from the first floor to a new location on the ground floor close to the conservatory whilst work progresses to remove the RAAC.
Thank you to all the teams at the Trust who have been involved in the work to create this facility – it looks great and offers a great service.
The takeaway service offers a range of meals, including main meals, baked potatoes, salads, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks.
It is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and is closed at weekends and bank holidays.
This week I would also like to appeal for donations of knitted kindness hearts, which help to bring comfort to the families of patients who are receiving last hours and days of life care at our hospitals.
The Palliative Care team gifts the hearts as a poignant keepsake – one that stays with the patient and others which are given to the patient’s loved ones.
Members of the public have kindly knitted the hearts since 2020, but we are now running low on stocks of the hearts. The hearts can also be crocheted.
The hearts make such a difference to our patients and their loved ones, so any donations would be greatly appreciated.
If you have a donation, you can contact the team on 01743 261000 ext. 3464 or drop the hearts off at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Ward Block reception or Treatment Centre reception or at the Princess Royal Hospital Volunteers’ Desk near the main entrance.
We have had glorious sunshine this week, but with warmer temperatures we have to ensure that we look out for those who might struggle to keep cool, particularly the elderly and young.
Our advice during this hot weather is to keep safe by ensuring that you drink plenty of fluids, stay in the shade and limit strenuous activity.
Finally, good luck to colleague Jan Meredith who has been shortlisted in the Practice Supervisor of the Year category for the prestigious Student Nursing Times Awards 2025, which take place on Friday (2 May).
Jan has dedicated her professional life to nursing and education – she has made such an impact on hundreds of student nurses and also her colleagues.
She has been a nurse for nearly 48 years and spent most of her career in the Intensive Care Unit (ITU).
