I hope that you had a lovely bank holiday weekend and managed to enjoy a little time in the sunshine.
The hot weather is due to continue this week and I would like to remind you to stay safe by following a few easy steps.
Please stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water; keep cool by seeking out air-conditioned spaces and using fans; stay in the shade and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm and protect yourself by wearing sunscreen and a hat when outdoors.
Make sure that you check on others, particularly vulnerable people such as the elderly, those with health conditions and the children. Visit NHS 111 online for non-emergency health concerns.
I would like to say a huge thanks for all those colleagues who worked over the bank holiday weekend in the exceptional heat and continued to keep our patients safe and supported.
It is also Emergency Medicine Day today (Wednesday) and I would like to thank those who make emergency medicine possible every single day.
Emergency Medicine Day is an opportunity to recognise the vital work carried out across our emergency departments and to raise awareness of the challenge faced by our teams.
We have also resumed orthopaedic joint replacement surgery which requires an overnight stay at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford. This brings many benefits for our patients.
The vital work to create a safer environment for patients has been completed on Ward 5, where patients stay to recover after their procedures.
It now means that all joint replacement patients can now be treated, including those with more complex needs.
There have since been 10 patients discharged on the same day after surgery for hip, knee and shoulder replacements. Discharging patients who are fit enough on the same day or within a few days helps them to gain their independence sooner and reduces the risk of infections.
Finally, congratulations to Egan Smith who has been awarded the ‘most committed apprentice’ by his training provider County Training.
This is a remarkable achievement for Egan who supports children and families across Shropshire in his role as a Front of House apprentice for Children’s services at Coral House, Shrewsbury.
He is currently undertaking the Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner apprenticeship, a programme designed to develop strong communication, problem solving and customer‑focused skills.
Egan brings enthusiasm, fresh perspectives, and a strong commitment to patient‑centred care
in his role. Well done Egan!
