Phlebotomy (Blood Collection; Venepuncture and Blood Tests)

The Phlebotomy team provides a service at many GP practices across the county and you may be able to book an appointment at your surgery.

The Phlebotomy departments at both Shrewsbury and Telford are generally at their busiest between 9am and 11am and priority is given to fasting patients and hospital patients.

Non-Fasting GP Patients (including Warfarin patients): 9.00am until 4.15pm

Hospital patients and fasting GP patients: 8:00am until 4.15pm.

This is a drop-in service, where we will see patients in order of arrival, available Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). Please be aware that this service is for patients over the age of 16 only. Please see the Children’s Services tab for more information.

The department is located on the ground floor and is accessed via the Out-patients department.

Disabled Access

There is disabled access to the department.  If patients are coming to Elizabeth House via the hospital corridor, there is ramp access via Pathology Specimen Reception and a wheelchair lift adjacent to the entrance to Clinic 9 (Clinical Trials).

The Phlebotomists based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital will take blood from children between the ages of 1 and 16 between 12 noon and 1pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). These are drop-in sessions so you will be seen in order of arrival. The Specialist Phlebotomist will assess each child and will offer anaesthetic cream or spray when appropriate.

The Phlebotomists do not take blood from children under 12 months.  Please contact the Children’s Assessment Bay, Ward 31: 01743 261000 x1031 for advice.

If you live in the Telford area, the Donnington Community Services Unit (telephone: 01743 450855) offers a service for children.  If the child is under 18 months old, fasting or needle-phobic then you can contact the Children’s Assessment Unit: 01952 641222 x4248 for advice.
