Swapping their NHS roles for running shoes, colleagues proudly represented the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Charity, raising an incredible £570, as they took on the Wace Morgan Shrewsbury 5 or 10K.

The colleagues from The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) put their best foot forward.

They were Kai Farmer, from the Communications Team, and daughter Amy Farmer, from the Care Transfer Hub, Becca Leahy, from Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Library, Kirstie Thomas, from Recruitment, Lydia Hughes, from the Communications Team, and Nicci Smith, Rachel Fitzhenry and Eve Simmonds-Jones, from the Public Participation Team.

Starting and finishing in the beautiful Quarry Park, participants tackled a picturesque but challenging 10-kilometre course through the heart of Shrewsbury. They navigated a moderately hilly circuit through the town’s historic high streets, residential roads and River Severn crossings delivering an unforgettable race-day experience.

Kai who ran with his daughter said: “Six months ago, neither of us would have believed we’d be taking on a 10K together. There have been sore legs, plenty of laughter, and a few moments where we’ve questioned why we signed up but crossing that finish line together made it all worthwhile.

“We’re incredibly proud to work for the Trust and see first-hand the difference the Charity makes every day. Knowing that we’ve raised money to support it made every step, and hill, worth it!”

Thanks to their efforts and the rest of the team they raised an amazing £570 to help Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Charity continue funding projects that enhance care for patients, families and staff across the Trust.

Donations help provide state-of-the-art equipment, improvements to patient environments, staff wellbeing, and vital research.

Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation said: “The Shrewsbury 5 or 10K is a fantastic event that brings our community together, and it was wonderful to see colleagues from across the Trust taking part.

“A challenge like this requires real commitment and determination, and to raise £570 while doing so is a fantastic achievement. Every pound raised will help us continue to make a positive difference to our hospitals. Thank you to everyone who ran, donated and supported the team on the day.”

From the finish line of the 10k to the start of the next challenge

Having now completed the Shrewsbury 10k, Kirstie has her next challenge lined up and is taking part in the Shrewsbury Half and Metric Half marathon for the charity on Sunday 27 September. She is continuing to raise funds for the new critical care and oncology roof garden at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The garden which set to open in 2028 as part of the Hospital Transformation Programme (HTP) aims to provide a dedicated outdoor sanctuary where patients can benefit from fresh air and natural surroundings as part of their care journey.

Lydia is also already looking ahead to her next Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital challenge, having secured a place in the 2027 London Marathon. She will be taking on one of the world’s most iconic races, in support of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Charity, helping to raise funds for projects that enhance care and support for patients, families and staff across the Trust.
