Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop skills and give back to your local community.  As a volunteer you play an important role within our hospitals, working alongside staff in a variety of departments. Volunteering is fun and rewarding, it allows you to meet new people, make new friends and try new things – it can even keep you active, mentally and physically.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and we really value the different skills, outlooks and experiences our volunteers bring to the organisation. As a volunteer you will meet lots of new people and join a growing volunteer community.

Volunteer Patient Drivers

Volunteer Patient Driver Role: Our volunteer drivers offer a safe and compassionate service, helping patients get home from the hospital while reducing stress and anxiety. Our volunteers can choose to be based at either our Royal Shrewsbury Hospital or Princess Royal Hospital site using either their own vehicle or our pool car to transport patients all over the County. This is a very rewarding role supporting our patients to get home from hospital as quickly as possible.

Full training is provided along with driving assessments

Volunteer Buggy Drivers

Volunteer Buggy Driver Role: In September 2025, we launched our first Patient Buggy Service at our Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site. Our volunteer buggy drivers transport patients along a designated route between the Treatment Centre and Outpatient Clinics, offering practical support and reassurance for patients attending clinics.

Full training is provided.

A warm smile and an offer to help can make a huge difference to someone is visiting our hospital. We are looking for volunteers to be the friendly face that helps patients and visitors feel welcome and supported. In this role, you’ll assist with directions, answer general queries, and offer a warm reception to everyone entering the hospital.

Our ‘Meet and Greet’ volunteers are be based at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, the Princess Royal Hospital (Telford) and the Community Diagnostic Centre at Hollinswood House (Telford) in a high-traffic area such as the hospital entrance to help patient/visitors get to their destination, or as the first point of contact in a busy department/clinic to offer support and information.

Make a real difference to patients by offering companionship, reassurance, and non-clinical support during their stay. Our Patient Support Volunteers help to make a patient’s stay in hospital as comfortable as possible by offering both practical and emotional support. Working in partnership with ward staff, patients and carers to provide extra support and encouragement to patients, our volunteers play a key role in our patient’s experience.
We can offer a range of roles over both our Princess Royal and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital sites with full training and support provided.

Speciality Patient Experience Groups are being established to drive patient experience initiatives at a local level. The groups will work to improve patient experience in the area, including:

  • How the service responds and learns from feedback
  • Identifying trends to inform work and help improve services
  • Represent the patient voice, providing insight from a patient perspective

This is an exciting opportunity for patients or carers who have accessed services within the Trust to get involved within a wide range of services such as; Medicine, Emergency, Surgery, Women’s Health, Maternity, Children & Young People, Support Services and Corporate Services.

Kickstart your journey in healthcare through structured volunteering opportunities. Whether completing your Duke of Edinburgh Award or joining our Volunteer to Career programme, you’ll gain valuable experience and skills for the future.

Our Volunteer to Career programme provides volunteers looking for a career in the NHS valuable experience through volunteering whilst also providing multiple educational sessions over a 6-month periods, which are held during the evening on our Princess Royal Hospital site at Telford, to give candidates valuable information and support in pursuing a career in the NHS. We can offer a range of volunteering placements across both our Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital sites for volunteers to complete a minimum of 50 hours volunteering over the 6-month period in order to complete the programme and continue their volunteering independently or continue their career journey.

Our Admin Support Volunteers help hospital teams run smoothly by providing essential behind-the-scenes support. This is a great opportunity to contribute to patient care in a non-clinical role, and we have departments across both our Royal Shrewsbury and Princess Royal sites who benefit greatly from volunteer support.

Could you offer a listening ear and helpful information to our patients or our wonderful volunteers over the phone? We currently offer roles based at our Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site to provide information and support to our patients through our appointment reminder calls, along with wellbeing and support calls to our amazing volunteers. We are looking for volunteers with great listening and communication skills along with empathy and professionalism to help us to offer this rewarding and valuable support.

Volunteers are at the core of what the League of Friends does. They now only have 35-40 volunteers, when once they had upwards of 200, so are keen to build up again to help in the four shops across the Royal Shrewsbury site.

They are looking for volunteers aged 16 and upwards, from teenagers looking to learn life experience, to retirees looking to make new friends. Often volunteers are looking to “give something back” after receiving treatment from equipment donated by the League of Friends, while others are looking to help a worthwhile cause in their local community.

All the money the volunteers help raise contributes directly to the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust by gifting the very latest medical equipment.

However, just as important to them, and to patients, is being able to offer a touch of kindness or a friendly smile at what may be a difficult time.
