Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop skills and give back to your local community.  As a volunteer you play an important role within our hospitals, working alongside staff in a variety of departments. Volunteering is fun and rewarding, it allows you to meet new people, make new friends and try new things – it can even keep you active, mentally and physically.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and we really value the different skills, outlooks and experiences our volunteers bring to the organisation. As a volunteer you will meet lots of new people and join a growing volunteer community.

At present we are looking for volunteers to support in the following roles:

Volunteer Drivers

Could you help support our patients getting home from hospital? You could make a real difference to our patients and help them get home sooner as a volunteer driver. The volunteer driver service runs Monday to Friday and you can use your own car, or the hospital can provide one if you prefer.

Could you support our patients as a volunteer buggy driver? In this role, you would primarily be transport patients (aged 18 and over only) and visitors within the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital using an electric buggy. Our buggy service helps patients get from the Treatment Centre to the Outpatient department. As a buggy volunteer you offer a vital role to helping our patients and visitors with mobility issues, making it easier to access hospital services. Could you support patients who have recently been discharged by becoming a Telephone Support Volunteer? In this rewarding role, you could provide valuable reassurance and support to patients following their discharge from hospital to help them settle at home and reduce the possibility of readmission to hospital.

A warm smile and an offer to help can make a huge difference to someone is visiting our hospital. Meet and Greet volunteers are be based in a high-traffic area such as the hospital entrance to help patient/visitors get to their destination, or greeting them in a busy department/clinic. We are looking for volunteers to support at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, the Princess Royal Hospital (Telford) and the Community Diagnostic Centre at Hollinswood House (Telford).

Could you provide support in this busy area of our hospitals? As an Emergency Department Volunteer you will improve patient and relative experience of the Emergency Department through offering both practical and emotional support. You will support staff in the efficient running of the Emergency Department by helping with non-clinical tasks such as food and beverage rounds, restocking areas, and keeping patients company. You will display a helpful and friendly approach to all patients, visitors, staff and colleagues.

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has successfully delivered four cohorts through the Volunteer to Career (VtC) Programme which supports people to explore careers in healthcare while volunteering. We are working with Helpforce, which is a national charity set up to expand volunteering in the NHS, and the local Armed Forces network as one of 14 pilot sites to deliver two Veterans and Families Volunteer to Career Programmes with the aim of creating a pathway for retired veterans and their families to work within the healthcare sector in clinical and non-clinical roles.

The youth volunteer programme is closed to applications and will reopen in September 2025.

Volunteers are at the core of what the League of Friends does. They now only have 35-40 volunteers, when once they had upwards of 200, so are keen to build up again to help in the four shops across the Royal Shrewsbury site.

They are looking for volunteers aged 16 and upwards, from teenagers looking to learn life experience, to retirees looking to make new friends. Often volunteers are looking to “give something back” after receiving treatment from equipment donated by the League of Friends, while others are looking to help a worthwhile cause in their local community.

All the money the volunteers help raise contributes directly to the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust by gifting the very latest medical equipment.

However, just as important to them, and to patients, is being able to offer a touch of kindness or a friendly smile at what may be a difficult time.
