Late pregnancy is when you are 28+ weeks pregnant, also known as the third trimester.

During the third trimester there will be more appointments, at each appointment we will:

  • Check your blood pressure
  • Check your urine for protein and glucose
  • Measure your abdomen if you are not having ultrasound scans. If you are having ultrasound scans these will be a separate appointment in the Maternity Outpatient Department.
  • Discuss your baby’s movements

During the third trimester of your pregnancy, you can expect the following appointments, scans, and tests:

28-week routine pregnancy appointment.

  • You will be offered further blood tests:
    • A full blood count
    • Blood group and antibodies
  • Offered your first anti-D treatment if you’re rhesus negative and consider an iron supplement if you’re anaemic, if not previously diagnosed.

30-week routine pregnancy appointment

If this is your first baby or you need closer observation.

32-week routine pregnancy appointment

If you were not seen at 30 weeks.

36-week routine pregnancy appointment

During this appointment your midwife or doctor will measure the size of your uterus, measure your blood pressure and test your urine.

If your baby is in the breech position on an ultrasound scan, you may be offered an appointment for an external cephalic version (ECV), a procedure used to turn your baby to a head-down position. If you do not wish to have this procedure, then a further appointment to discuss your options with a consultant will be arranged.

37-week routine pregnancy appointment

For those identified as needing closer observation.

38-week routine pregnancy appointment

Your midwife or doctor will discuss your options about what happens if your pregnancy goes over 41 weeks.

39-week routine pregnancy appointment

For those identified as needing closer observation.

40-week routine pregnancy appointment

If this if your first baby or if you have been identified as needing closer observation.

41-week routine pregnancy appointment

During this appointment you may be offered a membrane sweep or arrange an induction of labour. This will be discussed at your previous appointment.
