Registering a birth

All births must be registered within 42 days of the baby being born, which can be done at the local register office.

When you register your child’s birth, you should know the following:

  • The time, place and date of the birth (if more than one baby was born, the time of each birth)
  • The name, surname and sex of the baby
  • Parents’ names, surnames and address (including maiden name of the mother)
  • Places and dates of the parents’ birth
  • If applicable, the date of parents’ marriage or civil partnership
  • If applicable, the number of the children the mother has
  • Parents’ jobs
