16-week routine follow up pregnancy appointment with a midwife

During this appointment the midwife will discuss with you the results of any screening tests, take your blood pressure and test your urine and discuss the 20-week scan with you.

20-week scan – also known as the anomaly scan

This is a detailed ultrasound scan which checks the physical development of your baby and the location of your placenta.

It is carried out when you’re between 18 and 21 weeks pregnant.

This scan is offered to everyone; however, you do not have to have it if you do not want to although it is recommended.

You can also ask the sonographer at the beginning of the scan to find out your baby’s sex, however the priority will be your baby’s health. If we are unable to tell you the sex due to baby’s position, we will be unable to offer you another scan for this as we do not offer specific scans for finding out the sex of your baby.

24-week routine pregnancy appointment, if this is your first pregnancy

During this appointment your midwife or doctor will measure the size of your uterus, measure your blood pressure and test your urine.

Your employer will ask for a MAT B1 form to confirm your pregnancy, which is normally given out by the midwife at your 24 weeks appointment. It cannot be given out before the 20th week of pregnancy.

It may be recommended that you have a test for gestational diabetes in this stage of pregnancy based on the information you provided at booking. The booking midwife should highlight this to you if you meet the criteria. This test is known as a glucose tolerance test.
