Veteran Aware

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals (SaTH) are signed up with the Armed Forces Covenant, and pledge that no member of the Armed Forces Community should face disadvantage in the provision of public and commercial services compared to any other citizen. As a Trust we are committed to honour the Covenant and support the Armed Forces Community.

There are many additional services that the Armed Forces Community can access to support them as patients. Details of the services are available here. To access the veterans’ mental health transition, intervention and liaison service as a veteran, patients must:

  • Be a resident in England
  • Have served in the UK armed forces for a full day
  • Be registered with a GP practice in England or be willing to register with a GP
  • Be able to provide their military service number or another form of acceptable proof of eligibility

Did you know SaTH has an Armed Forces Charity, so if you would like help raise funds to increase this charity pot please reach out the team.

  • Armed Forces Support from Shropshire Council is available here.
  • Armed Forces Support from Telford and Wrekin Council is available here.
  • Armed Forces Support through the Volunteer to Career (VtC) Programme is available here

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they serve with their lives.

Recruitment Training Package

Are you a Veteran or a family member of someone serving in the armed forces and are looking to explore a career in Healthcare?

We are working with Helpforce, which is a national charity set up to expand volunteering in the NHS, and the local Armed Forces network as one of 14 pilot sites to deliver two Veterans and Families Volunteer to Career Programmes in 2025 with the aim of creating a pathway for veterans and their families to work within the healthcare sector in clinical and non-clinical roles.

The Veteran’s Volunteer to Career (VtC) programme allows you to explore careers before committing to a job or retraining and provides a direct route to work in the healthcare sector through career-based volunteering and additional training to support applications and interviews.

The VtC programme will give you a greater insight into a particular profession/role and NHS experience in that role. You do not need any previous experience or qualifications to apply.  We are putting on two information sessions in January and opening up applications to join the first cohort 0f 20.
